My guess is that there's something odd about one or the other of your drives. Both my Combo drive (G4) and my DVD-ROM drive (PowerBook G3) read DVD-RW disks prepared on the Pioneer A04 (SuperDrive) in my iMac. You have a DVD drive which can burn DVD-RW discs, so naturally it can read them too.
