So gave mum a replacement player from our bedroom. to the point: this player has a computer DVD drive with the front bezel missing. the player was able to be hacked so I would assume the drive is RPC1. so now I am the happy owner of a drive that will attach to any computer and play any region etc.

HD DVD drives for linux?
I think Mike meant to say that a DVD-ROM is *read* *only* and not that it won't read CD's. Of course a DVD-ROM drive will read CD's, although a CD-ROM drive will not read DVD's. In order to burn disks - either CD's or DVD's - you need a CD/DVD-*RW* drive. A CD/DVD+/-RW drive will read/write CD's, DVD+ or DVD- disks

DVD drive will not read CDs - Vista
Go into Device Manager select those CD-ROM and DVD drives you say appear there. Right-click and uninstall them. Then put media in both; Windows 2000 CD-ROM where it belongs.. Then scan for hardware changes. Then immediately after that finishes reboot with the media still in the drives. Obviously you'll know if you

1x DVD-ROM drives provide a data transfer rate of 1.321 MB/s (11.08*10^6/8/2^20) with burst transfer rates of up to 12 MB/s or higher. The data transfer rate from a DVD-ROM disc at 1x speed is roughly equivalent to a 9x CD-ROM drive (1x CD-ROM data transfer rate is 150 KB/s, or 0.146 MB/s). DVD spin rate is about 3
