Too make a long story short the computer would not boot up at all, to the computer would not recognizie one of the drives, were the results. Since I was strapped for time (an appointment I could not miss) I ultimately just replaced his cd-rom drive with the dvd-rw drive and kept all the original jumper/cable

dvd drive is stuck
Every time there is an iTunes update and I install it, it knocks out my DVD drive and I have to do a registry edit to fix. I forget where I got the fix but it has something to do with removing the upper and lower filters in the registry. Since there are so many iTunes updates all the time this is getting annoying.

disappearing DVD drive
I upgraded to Vista and now I don't have use of my CD Drive or DVD Drive. It does not find it in the device manager and I already did delete the upper and lower filters. I went out and bought an external USB hard drive which is doing the trick for now. I reinstalled windows Vista and that did not help.
